A comparative analysis of Painlevé, Lax pair, and similarity transformation methods in obtaining the integrability conditions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations The inverse scattering transform (IST) as a tool to solve the initial-value problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with non-zero boundary values q l/r (t) ≡ A l/r e −2i A 2 l/r t+iθ l/r as x → ∓∞ is presented in the fully asymmetric case for both asymptotic amplitudes and phases, i.e., with A l = A r and θ l = θ r. The direct problem is shown to be well-defined for NLS solutions q(x, t) such that q(x, t) − q l/r (t) ∈ L 1,1 (R ∓) with respect to x for all t ≥ 0, and the corresponding analyticity properties of eigenfunctions and scattering data are established. The inverse scattering problem is formulated both via (left and right) Marchenko integral equations, and as a Riemann-Hilbert problem on a single sheet of the scattering variables λ l/r = k 2 + A 2 l/r , where k is the usual complex scattering parameter in the IST. The time evolution of the scattering coefficients is then derived, showing that, unlike the case of solutions with equal amplitudes as x → ±∞, here both reflection and transmission coefficients have a nontrivial (although explicit) time dependence. The results presented in this paper will be instrumental for the investigation of the long-time asymptotic behavior of fairly general NLS solutions with nontrivial boundary conditions via the nonlinear steepest descent method on the Riemann-Hilbert problem , or via matched asymptotic expansions on the Marchenko integral equations.

The Inverse Scattering Transform for the Defocusing Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations with Nonzero Boundary Conditions

A rigorous theory of the inverse scattering transform for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonvanishing boundary values q± ≡ q0e± as x → ±∞ is presented. The direct problem is shown to be well posed for potentials q such that q − q± ∈ L1,2(R±), for which analyticity properties of eigenfunctions and scattering data are established. The inverse scattering problem is formulated a...

Structured Matrix Numerical Solution of the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation by the Inverse Scattering Transform

The initial-value problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation is solved numerically by following the various steps of the inverse scattering transform. Starting from the initial value of the solution, a Volterra integral equation is solved followed by three FFT to arrive at the reflection coefficient and initial Marchenko kernel. By convolution these initial data are propagate...

Semiclassical limit of the scattering transform for the focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

The semiclassical limit of the focusing Nonlinear (cubic) Schrödinger Equation (NLS) corresponds to the singularly perturbed Zakharov Shabat (ZS) system that defines the direct and inverse scattering transforms (IST). In this paper, we derive explicit expressions for the leading order terms of these transforms, which are called semic...
